Châtel has a great selection of shops, bars and restaurants, as well as two cinemas, an ice-skating rink and a ten-pin bowling alley.

Outside the ski season, the area is a paradise for walkers, bikers and nature lovers. You could also try white-water sports on the River Dranse, or enjoy fishing or a picnic at the Lac de Vonnes.

Chalet Amarou can be booked with neighbouring Chalet Lula, to accommodate groups of up to 18 people (16 adults).

About the property...

Accommodation at Chalet Amarou is set over three floors, with four bedrooms and three bathrooms.

There's a garage for one car on the ground floor of the chalet, as well as an useful ski and bike store. There's also a bedroom that is ideal for a family, thanks to two double bunk beds and an en-suite shower room.

Take the stairs up to the first floor, where you'll find three more bedrooms, two of which can be arranged with twin or king-size beds. One of the bedrooms has an en-suite shower room, and there's another bathroom with a bath and separate shower which is shared by the other two bedrooms. There's also a separate WC. Two of the bedrooms also have access to the hot tub balcony – a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the view.

The beds are all made up with quality bed linen and topped with cosy throws, so you'll be nice and warm whatever the weather.

The top floor has been devoted to the living area, to make the most of the beautiful view. The spacious, modern kitchen at the back of the property has everything you need to cook up a delicious meal, and there's plenty of room to sit down together at the dining table in front of the fire. There's also a breakfast bar – perfect for grabbing a quick snack or for enjoying a drink while you keep the cook company!

The huge front and side windows fill the seating area with light and open onto the furnished balcony, which has amazing views over the rooftops to the valley and mountains. Fire up the barbecue and enjoy dinner out here, or just wrap up in a throw and come outside for a bit of stargazing! Inside, sink into the soft, L-shaped sofa with a book, or get together to watch a film to round off your perfect day in the mountains.

About the area...

Châtel is one of the 12 resorts in the huge Portes du Soleil area, and offers great access to Avoriaz, Torgon and Morgins. You’ll have the choice of 300 ski slopes and 197 lifts, all covered by the Portes du Soleil ski pass.

Situated at the end of the beautiful Abondance Valley, Châtel's altitude and location between the Alps and Lake Geneva means it enjoys a great snow record. There's a snowpark, boardercross course and great terrain for beginners at Super-Châtel, but also plenty to test intermediates and experts in the Linga/Pré-la-Joux sector and further afield on the Swiss side of the border.

And if cross-country skiing is more your thing, you'll find 49km of trails to explore around Châtel.

As a traditional farming village, Châtel is a lively place all year round, and there’s a great choice of shops, bars and restaurants for you to visit.

Outside the ski season, waterfalls and woods of the Abondance valley are popular with walkers – you can hike to a mountain restaurant for lunch, or visit a farm and pick up some delicious local cheese. Cyclists will appreciate the quieter roads around the resort – both the challenging cols which feature regularly in the Tour de France and the more relaxing valley routes. The Châtel bike park offers 20 downhill tracks, and there are plenty of bike shops and hire points in the village.

Walkers and trail runners can explore 48 circuits and 400km of paths, while families looking for child-friendly walks will appreciate the footpath around the lake. There is plenty going on at Lac de Vonnes, with fishing, paddle-boarding, discovery trails and a great playground.

Châtel has been awarded the Famille Plus label, so you can be sure that children will always be well catered for, with a full programme of activities in summer and in winter.

Older children will love the Fantasticable – an adrenalin-filled flight on two zip wires, which will see you flying over the hamlet of Plagne-Dranse at almost 100kmph! Other adventurous options include paragliding, rock-climbing, via ferrata, whitewater rafting and kayaking. There's no time to be bored!
